Match air intake to your engine

An intake is matched to the engine and the truck platform, not to the badge. An LB7 airbox is not an L5P airbox, and the mass-airflow calibration has to survive the swap.

Generation What it means for this part
LB7 / LLY / LBZ (2001–2007, GMT800) GMT800-platform airbox and intake tract. Kits list by year and engine code — check both, because 2004 and 2007 each contain two different engines.
LMM (2007.5–2010, GMT900) New body, new airbox. LLY, LBZ, and LMM trucks also carry the restrictive factory turbo inlet mouthpiece, which is worth replacing alongside an intake.
LML (2011–2016) The MAF calibration is less forgiving here — an intake tube that isn't the right diameter at the sensor throws lean and rich codes.
L5P (2017+, K2XX) Its own airbox on the K2XX HD platform. Nothing from an earlier truck fits.

Before you buy

  • → Match the tube diameter at the MAF sensor — quality kits are engineered to keep the sensor reading true.
  • → Enclosed airboxes keep intake air cooler than open filters in a hot engine bay; open filters are louder.
  • → Dry filters are wash-and-go; oiled filters flow well but over-oiling can foul a MAF sensor.

Air Intake: common questions

Will a cold air intake add power to a stock Duramax?
On its own, very little. What an intake does is remove a restriction and feed cooler, denser air, which helps most as part of an airflow package with the exhaust, a healthy turbo, and a tune. On a stock truck the honest gains are better throttle response, sound, and easier filter service.
Oiled or dry filter for a Duramax?
Dry synthetic filters are the low-maintenance choice — wash, dry, reinstall, and no risk of over-oiling. Oiled cotton filters flow very well and are the traditional performance choice, but too much oil can contaminate the mass-airflow sensor and cause driveability codes. If you're not meticulous about re-oiling, run dry.
Will an intake for an LBZ fit my LMM?
Usually not. The LBZ is a GMT800-platform truck and the LMM moved to the GMT900 body, which changed the airbox and the routing even though the engines are closely related. Confirm the kit lists your exact year and engine code — a 2007 truck can be either one.
