Match filters & maintenance to your engine

A Duramax will run past 300,000 miles when it's serviced on schedule, and the maintenance is simple compared to the repairs it prevents. Most of the parts are shared across generations — the ones that aren't are worth knowing.

Generation What it means for this part
Fuel filtration: 2001–2016 vs. 2017+ The 2017+ L5P uses a different fuel filter assembly than the 2001–2016 trucks. Filter kits are split by era, so match yours by engine code rather than by 'Duramax.'
Glow plugs Heat range and part number vary by generation. Replace when cold starts get hard or a glow-plug code sets — and always as a full set of eight.
Oil spec Use a diesel-rated oil meeting GM's dexos spec for your year — dexos2 on most older trucks, dexos D on the L5P and newer.
Air filter Airbox and filter shape follow the truck platform (GMT800, GMT900, K2XX), so confirm the body year as well as the engine.

Before you buy

  • Follow the oil-life monitor, but as a practical cap don't exceed roughly 7,500 miles or one year on a truck that tows or idles.
  • Drain water promptly when the water-in-fuel light comes on — water is what kills injectors and high-pressure pumps.
  • Change the oil filter every single time, and keep a spare fuel filter on the shelf so a service weekend isn't a parts-store trip.

Not sure which engine you have? Decode it from the eighth digit of your VIN with the Duramax VIN & engine code decoder, or map your year and platform in the generations & fitment guide.

Filters & Maintenance: common questions

How often should I change the fuel filter on a Duramax?
Service it on the factory interval for your year at minimum, and sooner if you run marginal fuel or the water-in-fuel light has come on. Fuel filtration is what protects the high-pressure pump and the injectors — the two most expensive things in the fuel system — so it's the last place to stretch an interval.
Which oil does a 6.6L Duramax take?
A diesel-rated oil meeting GM's dexos specification for your model year — dexos2 on most of the older trucks, dexos D on the L5P and newer. Follow the oil-life monitor, but treat roughly 7,500 miles or one year as a practical ceiling on a truck that tows or idles a lot.
Do I have to replace all eight glow plugs?
Yes, do them as a set. They age at the same rate, they're inexpensive relative to the labor of reaching them, and a mixed set of old and new plugs leaves you with the same hard cold start on a different cylinder. Confirm the correct heat range for your generation before ordering.
