Match injectors to your engine

Injectors are the most generation-specific part on the 6.6L. Match the engine code, not the model year — a 2007 truck can be an LBZ or an LMM, and they don't share an injector.

Generation What it means for this part
LB7 (2001–2004) Injectors live under the valve covers. When one fails it dilutes the oil with fuel. Because the labor is in getting to them, sets of eight are the standard job.
LLY / LBZ / LMM (2004.5–2010) GM moved the injectors on top of the heads. These solenoid-style Bosch common-rail units are far more durable and far easier to reach.
LML (2011–2016) Higher-pressure piezo injectors fed by the Bosch CP4 pump. If the CP4 has failed, it sends debris downstream — diagnose the pump before you install a new set.
L5P (2017+) Its own high-flow injectors built for the platform's factory power. Nothing from an earlier generation interchanges.

Before you buy

  • → Read cylinder balance rates first — the ECM already measures which cylinder is the outlier.
  • → Rule out the cheap causes before buying: clogged fuel filter, water in the fuel, a weeping return line.
  • → Budget for return-line connectors and fresh filtration with any injector job — dirty fuel is what kills the new set.

Injectors: common questions

Will LB7 injectors fit an LBZ or LMM Duramax?
No. The LB7 uses a different injector in a different location — under the valve covers rather than on top of the heads — and the common-rail LBZ and LMM injectors are a separate part family. Injectors are one of the parts where 'it's a Duramax' is not close enough; order by the eighth digit of your VIN.
How do I know it's the injectors and not the fuel supply?
Have the cylinder balance rates read on a scan tool. A cylinder that swings far from the pack names the failing injector. If the balance rates are even but the truck still starts hard and idles rough, look at the fuel filter, water in the fuel, the lift pump, and the injector return lines — starved fuel mimics bad injectors closely.
Do I have to replace all eight injectors at once?
Not always, but usually it's the right call. If one failed from age and mileage, the other seven have lived the same life. On the LB7 especially, where the labor to reach them is the expensive part, doing all eight while you're in there is the standard approach. A single injector that failed from a fluke can be replaced on its own.
