Turbos for the GM Duramax

Turbochargers, VGT units, turbo rebuild kits, and upgrade turbos for the GM Duramax diesel — restore stock boost or add drop-in and compound turbo power to your GM HD diesel.

1 part

Match turbos to your engine

Half of what gets diagnosed as a bad Duramax turbo is a sticking vane mechanism or a dead vane actuator — both far cheaper to fix than the turbo. Know which unit your engine came with before you shop.

Generation What it means for this part
LB7 (2001–2004) The only Duramax that left the factory with a fixed-geometry, wastegated IHI turbo. No electronic vane control and no factory exhaust brake.
LLY / LBZ / LMM (2004.5–2010) Garrett variable-geometry (VGT) turbos with an electronic vane actuator. Sticking vanes and failed actuators are common — and serviceable. These trucks also carry the restrictive factory turbo inlet mouthpiece.
LML (2011–2016) Revised Garrett VGT whose vanes also perform factory exhaust-brake duty, so a sticking mechanism costs you the brake as well as the boost.
L5P (2017+) A larger, electronically controlled VGT with far more airflow from the factory. Most L5P owners never touch it unless they're building.

Before you buy

  • Prove the turbo is bad: check vane movement and the actuator before you buy a cartridge.
  • On 2004.5–2010 trucks, replace the factory turbo inlet mouthpiece while the turbo is out — it's a documented restriction and never easier to reach.
  • Back added boost with head studs, fuel supply, and EGT monitoring, not just a bigger compressor.

Not sure which engine you have? Decode it from the eighth digit of your VIN with the Duramax VIN & engine code decoder, or map your year and platform in the generations & fitment guide.

Turbos: common questions

Which Duramax generations have a VGT turbo?
Every one from the LLY (2004.5) forward. The LB7 (2001–2004) is the only 6.6L with a fixed-geometry, wastegated turbo. From the LLY onward you're shopping Garrett variable-geometry units, and the L5P runs a larger electronically controlled version of the same design.
Can a sticking VGT be fixed without replacing the turbo?
Often, yes. Cleaning the vane mechanism, replacing the vane position actuator or its sensor, or fitting a rebuild kit restores a turbo that's only down on boost. Replace the cartridge or the whole unit when there's shaft play you can feel, damaged wheels, or oil passing into the intake.
Do I need a bigger turbo, or just a healthy one?
Most trucks want a healthy one. A stock-frame drop-in VGT upgrade is the practical step for a tuned truck that still tows and drives daily — it bolts into the factory location and keeps the electronic vane control. Larger fixed-geometry units and compounds bring supporting fuel, head-stud, and transmission work with them.
